The best of the Father Brown stories show Chesterton at his best as a writer: disciplined, employing a painterly prose style, displaying a ready sympathy with those whose lives have been touched by brokenness, and a redemptive thread that is at once profoundly human and arresting. There are passages in these stories of genuine beauty, pathos, and great good humor. The best of these tales bear the touch of a master. And, as P. D. James has written, Chesterton was well in advance of his time. He saw the possibilities of detective fiction as a genre and imbued it with a richness seldom present in the works of other writers.29 “We read the Father Brown stories,” she said, “for a variety of pleasures, including their ingenuity, their wit and intelligence, and for the brilliance of the writing. But they provide more. Chesterton was concerned with the greatest of all problems, the vagaries of the human heart.”30

In the end, there is far more to the Father Brown stories than meets the eye. The best of them were perhaps the best forum for his artistry as a writer—and they may well embody another trait no less telling or important. Do the Father Brown stories offer the best collective summation of Chesterton’s reasons for belief? Does he, in the guise of masterful detective fiction, point the reader to the solution of questions caught up with life’s greatest mysteries? It would seem that the answer to that question might well be yes.
